Let’s keep it clean!

Soap & Making Soap

Does your soap contain lye?

Yes, all soaps (commercial or handmade) contain lye. There is really no way to make soap without it. But, luckily for all of us, lye gets neutralized out of the soap during the saponification process so it does not exist in the final product.

Do you use any animal products?

No, we do not use animal fats in our products. Our soaps are vegetarian and vegan, too!

Are your products safe for sensitive skin?

Definitely. Commercial soaps tend to be quite irritating to many of us due to all the added chemicals that are used to produce them—handmade soaps are much gentler on the skin.

Handmade soaps also have the benefit of including glycerin; mass produced soaps do not include glycerin, as the large soap companies remove it and sell it as a separate product for the sake of higher profits.

What is glycerin? Why should I care if it’s in my soap?

Glycerin is a humectant (attracts water). When applied to the skin, it helps to seal in moisture. It is a substance found naturally in skin and one of the many substances in skin that gives it a healthy look and feel. Glycerin, or glycerol, fights dryness and can negate the effects of skin diseases such as psoriasis. Glycerin is an emollient, making skin not only moist, but soft and supple.

How do you choose which oils to use in your soap?

Oils are chosen according to the benefits they provide. We carefully consider the benefits of each oil used when creating a recipe. Did you know that olive oil, for example, creates a very conditioning bar, whereas coconut oil helps create a very cleansing, hard bar with a nice creamy lather?
